The Colloid and Surface Chemistry Group (CSCG) was founded by SCI past-president Sir Eric Rideal, a pioneer in the field after whom SCI’s annual Rideal Award and Lecture is named – a coveted prize for scientists working in colloid and interface science.

Colloid chemistry deals with matter in a state of very fine subdivision in which each particle has a high surface/volume ratio. The principles of surface chemistry therefore largely govern the special properties of col- loids. The subject of surface chemistry is thoroughly dealt with in Adam's book " The Physics and Chemistry of Surfaces • Important in colloid and surface chemistry and biology • Surface-active agent: molecule with hydrophobic (= lipophilic) and hydrophilic (= lipophobic) portions. • e.g: (a) sodium dodecyl sulfate CH3(CH2)11–OSO3 – Na+ (b)salts of bile acids – sodium deoxycholate • Can also be cationic, e.g. C14H29NH3+ Br – (a common disinfectant) CO2 Š OH OH Na+ With principles that are shaping today's most advanced technologies, from nanomedicine to electronic nanorobots, colloid and interface science has become a truly interdisciplinary field, integrating chemistry, physics, and biology. Colloid and Surface Chemistry: Exploration of the Nano World- Laboratory Guide explains the basic principles of colloi Laboratory of Colloid and Surface Chemistry (LCSC) Physical and analytical chemistry of colloids and polymers is the focus of our research and teaching. The Surface and Colloid Chemistry Group focuses its research on physicochemical aspects of drug delivery, particularly for amphiphilic host defense peptides and nanoparticulate delivery systems. For these systems, we employ a range of surface and colloid chemistry techniques, including ATR-FTIR, QCM-D, SAXS, and light scattering. Online Course: Colloid Chemistry and Colloidal Dispersions - Fundamentals and Practical Aspects The course is focused on particles that are dispersed in liquids. Nearby topics, such as surfactant chemistry, polymers in solution, emulsions and foams are also covered to some degree in order to make the course complete on a stand-alone basis. Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects is an international journal devoted to the science underlying applications of colloids and interfacial phenomena. The journal aims at publishing high quality research papers featuring new materials or new insights into the role of colloid Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces is an international journal devoted to fundamental and applied research on colloid and interfacial phenomena in relation to systems of biological origin, having particular relevance to the medical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, food and cosmetic fields.
